Extra post for the points

Tomorrow will be my last day at Bridgewater State College as an undergraduate student. Well kind of, I guess not really until Saturday, but whatever. After graduation I will be working with the Orientation Program here at Bridgewater State.

Apparently there is a new reservation program coming to the campus and I am going to be attending the session at 11:00am to learn how to use it. All year long I worked as a Student Program Advisor (SPA) in the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership and we worked with r25's. Don't ask me what that stands for because I do not know. With this new system the Student Program Advisers are going to work more closely with the technology aspect of the reservations. I am excited to see what this will do for the intercommunication between OSIL and CESO!!

Digital Drop Box

So as my career at Bridgewater State College comes to an end I realized that I still do not understand everything that I do as an undergraduate.
I have been an active member of the blackboard system. I know how to email through it, check my grades, post on the discussion board, and much more. I have been an Administrator as well as a Student account. For the life of me, I do not know what the difference is between sending an email to a professor and dropping something in the "Digital Dropbox!" I know how to do it, and I have successfully done it many times. I just don't know what makes this form of communication so special.............

Cell Phones

So my cell phone is having some temporary difficulties and I can not use it as a phone.

People keep asking why I bother carrying it around if I can't call anyone. I have begun to realize I use my phone for so many other things~! It is my alarm clock, my day planner, my watch, my address book, and so much more. This is a lot like convergence's discussion on the "black box."

I do miss being able to talk to someone at the touch of a button.

Archives

So I haven't made a post in awhile. Oops

Basically what I have done in the last month between 396 and 396 has consumed my life with mass media. One thing I have found very interesting was the reasearch for my 496 paper based on The Comment, Bridgewater State College's student-run newspaper. As I have sat in the archives for hours upon end I realized that it is extremely fascinating that they still hold on to all of those records.

I have always heard about going to a large library like the Boston Public Library and finding the back issues of the Boston Globe to do research but I never realized how useful it would be for them to save all of the published issues.

What became more fascinating to me was how most archives are also published online. I sat in the little classroom on the third floor of the library with the print issue in my hand while looking at the same article on the computer screen. I still feel that you can't beat looking through the original copy but it does make research convenient to not have to leave your home to find an old article.

Wiki's

Everyone has heard of Wikipedia... But I am assuming not everyone fully understood what it was and why it had it's name. I recently found out that a "wiki" is basically a huge blog. It is a website that many people can work on and edit/add to.

I have been invited to NASPA to present the Leadership Institute that Bridgewater State College puts on. We are going to present the new cutting edge style we used of podcasting the seminars and allowing a more flexible style, built for the busy college student. Since there are 4 people from different offices and including off campus working on this project there is a wiki setup for communication purposes.

The Director of Student Involvement and Leadership, Cindy Kane, was the person who pushed this idea forward. She asked for the help of the vocal stylings of Micheal Miller who is a professional speaker. She also needed the support of her higher ups, Cathy Holbrook in the Student Affairs office. These are the three other people who are participating in this new wiki that i am subscribing to.

When i first blogged for 396 I said that I had never blogged before and never thought I would. Now between 396, 496, and this new wiki thing. I am blogging left and right. It is almost scary how open the internet is making our social life. At the same time it is fascinating that we can be connected to people long distance at any moment through blog.

I was just introduced to this yesterday so I will post again how it works out for me.

Family Vacation

So I went to New Hampshire with the family the past weekend. It was so relaxing!! The good thing was that I could not do any work. Unfortunately I got no work done, so now I am stressing. I could not believe when I walked into the home. There was no cable, the t.v. got 3 fuzzy channel that could be fixed by holding onto the bunny ear antennas. The furniture was polyester and the couches were still pull out style as opposed to futons. The first night I thought, "how will I make it through this weekend." Now that I am back in Bridgewater with wireless internet, cable television, and email back in my life I am overwhelmed and so distracted!! I can not believe how much more relaxed i was once I took all of the technological factors out of my life.

Although, as I mentioned in my previous post, I am a social butterfly. Now I am sitting here blogging in a study lounge in Crimson Hall with 6 of my friends around me.

Life is good!!

To answer dr b's comment on my last blog. I have never gotten into posting my thoughts out there on the internet. I never got invovled in the 'livejournal' thing and the only reason I got MySpace was because I had my wisdom teeth taken out over the summer and I was sooooo bored I figured I'd pick up a new hobby. I now check myspace once a month, if that. My main internet hobby is going on Facebook.com or doing random Google searches (I am a huge fan of Google Earth)!! I guess too much of a "social butterfly" (that's what my mom used to call me) to sit behind a computer for too long.

As for this past week...
I turned 22 on Sunday. That was fun. Someone grabbed a hold of my camera through out the night so needless to say I have many humorous pictures to remember my 2008 birthday. I also now own my first pair of Uggs. I didn't even ask for them so that was a huge surprise. The only problem is, they are so nice that I am affraid to wear them and get them dirty.

Well that is all I can post for now. Happy Blogging!!
